MOAA offers two different awards programs each year, the Communications Awards and
the Level of Excellence Awards. The Communications Awards are based on seven categories
and a chapter can enter in as many categories as they want to compete in. These
categories are Print Newsletters, Electronic Newsletters, Web sites, Best Legislative
Coverage-both print and web site, Best Recruiting Brochure and Unique Communications-phone
networks or special publications. A checklist outlining the submittal can be found
in Appendix M of the Council and Chapter Policies and Procedures Guide, updated
2009, or on the MOAA website, www.MOAA.org under Chapters/Community, click on Chapter
Leaders, then Web Resource and Logos. Submittals are due to MOAA on 1 February each
year.
While the Communications Awards submittals are fairly easy to put together, the
Levels of Excellence Awards require a bit more thought. These awards have an objective
and subjective parts, which are outlined in Appendix M referenced above. Each part
is worth 120 points and a chapter needs to achieve 220 points for a 5 Star award
and 200 points for a 4 Star award. Section I, the Objective scoring is straight
forward with most answers requiring a yes or no answer, the Subjective portion requires
some concise narrative explanations and in order to encourage more chapter to submit
packets for a Level of Excellence (LOE) Award, FCOC is posting some excellent examples
of previous 5-Star Award winners. Please remember that these are guides, with some
suggestions on how to write up the events your chapter undertakes, it is not intended
to become a writing contest, quality over quantity is stressed when evaluated.
Examples are provided from Chapters who were awarded 5 Star Level of Excellence:
