On Sunday,
February 5, several MOAA members took part in an interfaith celebration
sponsored by The American Legion Flagler Post #115, honoring The Four Chaplains
who gave their lives so that others could survive when the SS Dorchester was
sunk on February 3, 1943.
The sobering service
began with greetings from Past Commander of the State of Florida American
Legion and the presentation of colors by flag bearers from veteran
organizations throughout the area, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National
Anthem. Ray Parker presented the flag
for MOAA #41.
In his capacity as 1st Vice Commander for the American Legion, MOAA Board Member, David Hammond, performed the candle lighting ceremony in
remembrance of each chaplain.
MOAA and
American Legion Chaplain Harry Gilman presented the moving story of the SS
Dorchester, and biographies of each chaplain were read. Prayers were led by clergy of four different faiths, and patriotic songs were sung prior to taps, played by the Florida Coastal Police and Fire Pipes & Drums, and the retirement of colors.
In addition to
the ceremony participants, more than 100 persons witnessed the one-hour
ceremony and were invited to a join with the American Legion and its Auxiliary
in desserts and coffee/soft drinks afterwards.
